In the heart of Nepal’s Himalayas, Tsho Rolpa and Dudhkunda are two incredible spots for nature lovers and adventurers. Recently, I had the chance to explore both, and it was nothing short of breathtaking. From glacier-fed lakes to serene mountain views, here are the top 10 reasons why these destinations should be on your trekking list.
1. Breathtaking Mountain Lakes
Dudhkunda and Tsho Rolpa are lakes like no other. Dudhkunda, with its crystal-clear water at the base of towering peaks, offers the perfect spot to relax and take in the surreal views. Tsho Rolpa, on the other hand, is a glacier lake vast, icy-blue expanse surrounded by jagged mountains. The combination of the lakes, the sky, and the mountains is a treat for the eyes. I remember sitting by the lake, munching on some badam, completely at peace.

2. Scenic Adventure Through Diverse Landscapes
The journey to these lakes is just as rewarding as the destinations themselves. Walking alongside the Tamakoshi River, you pass through dense jungles, cross stunning waterfalls, and trek through rugged mountain paths. Every step brings a new, beautiful view of Nepal’s diverse landscapes. It’s the kind of experience where the journey is just as memorable as reaching the lakes.

3. An Affordable Yet Epic Adventure
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly trekking experience without compromising on beauty or adventure, this is the place. From the start, nature spoils you with its grandeur, and the treks themselves don’t require expensive gear or arrangements. It’s perfect for those seeking to experience the Himalayas without breaking the bank.
4. Challenge and Reward
Though the trek is challenging, especially with recent road damage from floods and landslides, it makes the experience even more rewarding. The detours and uphill climbs test your endurance, but every step is worth it. Be prepared for some steep sections early on, so physical and mental preparedness is essential. However, these challenges only heighten the sense of accomplishment once you push through.
Along the way, I found simple yet extraordinary rewards that made every difficult step worthwhile. One of the most unexpected highlights was the water. The natural water flowing from taps along the trail was cold, pure, and unbelievably refreshing. Every sip felt like it washed away all my tiredness, a true blessing after hours of walking.
5. Hospitality and Local Life
The people you meet along the way, especially in places like Simigaon and Na Village, are kind and welcoming. Many locals run small hotels, and they truly know how to make you feel at home. The hospitality was one of the highlights of my trek. And don’t miss Na Village itself, it’s a gem where the simplicity of life meets the grandeur of the mountains.
6. Wildlife Encounters
During the trek, I was lucky enough to spot a group of musk deer near a waterfall, gracefully walking along the edge of a cliff. The wildlife in this region adds an extra layer of magic to the journey, reminding you that you’re in a place untouched by time. If you’re really lucky, you might even spot a red panda!
7. Perfect Trekking Weather: When to Visit Tsho Rolpa
The best time to visit Tsho Rolpa and Dudhkunda is between September to November, when the weather is ideal for trekking. During my October trip, the mornings were clear and bright, making the views absolutely stunning, while the afternoons began to get a little foggy. If you’re wondering when to visit Tsho Rolpa, this period offers the best visibility and trekking conditions. The stable weather during these months makes it easier to enjoy the breathtaking scenery without worrying about rain or snow.

8. A Journey for Experienced Trekkers
This trek is not for beginners. I saw many people turning back after struggling with the steep terrain. If you’re physically fit and mentally prepared for the challenge, though, the rewards are immense. The trek starts at Chetchet, and from there, it’s all about walking—through the mountains and valleys—so come prepared!
9. Pure Bliss in Na Village
One of my most cherished moments was having lunch at Na Village. Sitting there, gazing at the towering peaks while enjoying a simple meal, was pure bliss. But the magic didn’t end there. At night, the views are even more spectacular. Clear skies, bright stars, the moon lighting up the mountain, it’s an unforgettable sight. If you’re someone who loves stargazing or mountain views at night, this village offers an incredible experience.

10. Two Must-See Destinations in One Trek
I recommend visiting Dudhkunda first, then heading toward Tsho Rolpa. Both lakes offer different yet equally captivating experiences, making this trek a journey that covers multiple highlights in one go. Don’t forget to explore Na Village along the way, a place where the serenity of the mountains and the warmth of the people will stay with you long after the trek is over.

Final Thoughts
Tsho Rolpa and Dudhkunda provide an unforgettable trekking experience. From the pristine lakes to the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people and the refreshing taste of mountain water, this trek has it all. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines physical challenge with stunning natural beauty, pack your bags and head to these two incredible destinations.
